Side effects of hyaluronic acid as a dietary supplement

Side effects of hyaluronic acid as a dietary supplement

At present, there are no studies showing any known side effects of hyaluronic acid as a dietary supplement in horses, dogs or humans. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body where it has several functions. It has a lubricating effect on the joint and a high viscosity, thus acting as a shock absorber under load. Hyaluronic acid also helps to transport nutrients to the cartilage and to remove waste products from the cartilage.

Please note that in this article we are only talking about oral intake of hyaluronic acid. We have therefore not taken into account possible side effects of injections, such as rooster comb injections or cosmetic beauty treatments.

Hyaluronic acid as a dietary supplement for horses, dogs and humans

Horses that are heavier and therefore subjected to higher loads often benefit from hyaluronic acid supplementation from a relatively young age. Joint inflammation is by far the most common cause of lameness in horses. As many as 10 horses a day are put down because of it.

Since hyaluronic acid can be given daily over a long period of time without side effects, it is a suitable supplement in the animals' daily diet. This also applies to dogs of the heavier breeds, especially as they get older.

We humans notice the decrease in hyaluronic acid as we get older. Our bodies become stiffer and our skin drier. By taking daily hyaluronic acid supplements, we can prevent the feeling of dry and irritated skin and instead enjoy supple, smooth and elastic skin.
